Long-Term Substitute Teaching Assistant - Special Education

Principal / Assistant Principal
SUMMARY
The Long-Term Substitute Teaching Assistant - Special Education provides temporary, extended support within a special education classroom during the absence of a regular staff member. This position assists teachers in implementing instructional and non-instructional activities, supporting students with diverse learning, emotional, behavioral, and developmental needs. The long-term substitute is expected to maintain continuity of classroom routines, behavioral programs, and instructional support to ensure a stable and productive learning environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Other duties may be assigned as needed to support classroom continuity.
Assists the special education teacher in daily classroom operations, including instructional and non-instructional activities.
Supports implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) under the direction of certified staff.
Demonstrates understanding, sensitivity, and responsiveness to students' academic, emotional, and behavioral needs.
Provides individual and small-group academic support as directed by the teacher.
Follows prescribed behavioral management and intervention programs with consistency and fidelity.
Maintains classroom structure and routines to ensure stability during the teacher's absence.
Supervises students in classroom, hallway, cafeteria, playground, and community-based settings as assigned.
Assists in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays, including bulletin boards and visual supports.
Keeps accurate records of student work, behavior data, and progress monitoring as directed.
Writes assignments, objectives, and directions on the board as requested.
Corrects student work and provides feedback under teacher guidance.
Administers and records achievement and diagnostic assessments as directed by certified staff.
Communicates effectively with teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families as appropriate to the role.
Maintains confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with district policies and state/federal regulations.
Performs duties in alignment with district policies and School Committee regulations.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises students in the absence of the teacher when assigned.
Provides oversight of students during transitions and non-classroom activities as required.
