Come join the State of Alaska! This office of the Department of Family and Community Services, Office of Children's Services (OCS) is recruiting for full‑time Protective Service Specialist (levels 1|2|3) in Nome, Alaska. This position is open to all applicants.
Role SummaryAs a Protective Service Specialist you'll manage all aspects of Child Protection Services in the Family Services Unit, the Investigations & Assessment Unit, or as a Generalist covering both. Duties include investigating abuse/neglect reports, preparing intervention plans, coordinating referrals, writing court reports, working with Tribal/Community Partners, and traveling to remote villages as required.
Responsibilities- Investigate reports of abuse and/or neglect.
- Prepare plans for intervention, soliciting cooperation from families and others.
- Gather information about family dynamics and functionality.
- Develop plans to ensure child safety while supporting parents in addressing diminished protective factors.
- Place children out of the home with relatives or licensed foster homes when necessary.
- Provide ongoing and/or in‑home services to families.
- Coordinate referrals to other service providers and agencies.
- Write and submit reports to the court.
- Collaborate closely with Tribal/Community partners and other agencies.
- Maintain frequent face‑to‑face and telephonic contact with parents and caregivers.
- Travel to client locations as required, including remote villages, communities, and rural Alaska.
- Make referrals to additional service providers and agencies as needed.

Work EnvironmentThis field‑based role requires travel by small aircraft, all‑terrain vehicles, or boats to remote villages. Overnight accommodations may involve sleeping in offices, schools, or tribal community buildings. Frequency of travel is expected to be 4+ times per month with possible day trips and occasional overnight stays in rustic conditions. The role may involve evenings, weekends, and on‑call rotations.
LocationNome, Alaska. Travel to remote villages, communities, or rural locations throughout North Coast and Interior Region is required.
Required Licenses & CertificationsValid Alaska driver's license (Real ) and background investigation including fingerprinting. Child protective history check required for this job class.
