The position is responsible for advancing and supporting our ongoing transformation to full production machining automation of new and existing product lines in the Machine shop. The candidate must have strong Toolmaking/Manual Machinist abilities proficient in manual mills, lathes, and grinders, as well as Haas CNC 3 axis milling machines. The candidate will be building new and modifying/repairing production component tooling fixtures for full automation production.
Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.
- Responsible for machining new and repairing tooling fixtures to support Automation production CNC machines
- Monitors and inspect machined components coming off the machine for accuracy against specified standards on the drawings
- Responsible for general housekeeping in the work area, which includes preventative maintenance on the CNC machines
In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:
- Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures and Safety
- Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments

Physical ActivitiesWork may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work rts up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally. While performing the duties, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. Some employees may come into contact with potentially harmful chemicals or fumes, but ventilation systems normally minimize any harmful effects, and the work areas may be noisy at times.
RequirementsExperience
- Minimum 5
-7 years of experience in a similar position preferred plus
- High School Diploma or equivalent, or equivalent work experience
- CNC certification or CNC Trade School, a major plus
- Strong understanding of blueprint reading and geometric tolerancing, a plus.
- Strong sense of ownership and work ethic, written and verbal communication skills
- Basic computer skills, Email, etc.
- Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere, with minimal supervision and comply with high quality standards.
- Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities
Hourly rate for this position is $25.00 - $31.00 depending on experience.
