Overview
Job Summary:
The Sterile Processing Technician III ensures the highest quality standards are met by departmental procedures and established industry standards. Assumes responsibility and accountability for incorporating the vision, values, mission, and critical goals of the organization into their job performance. This role disassembles, cleans, disinfects, decontaminates, inspects, assembles, sterilizes, and distributes sterile instruments, flexible scopes and supplies used in the Operating Rooms, Maternity, Emergency Department, and throughout the hospital;
performs chemical, mechanical, and biological testing of disinfection and sterilization equipment. Must be able to perform all duties in accordance with the NWH Policies and Procedures. IAHCSMM and/or CBSPD standards and procedures should be understood and followed. Responsible for obtaining and maintaining CRCST or CBSPD certification at all times during employment.
- Perform the disassembly, cleaning, disinfection, decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation and other equipment.
- Leak test, evaluate, clean/disinfect, and process flexible endoscopes.
- Inspect instrumentation for cleanliness and proper functioning.
- Assemble surgical instruments and kits utilizing kit assembly information.
- Package, wrap, and prepare kit/instrument loads for sterilization.
- Load, operate, monitor, and document all decontamination, disinfection, sterilization, and monitoring equipment.
- Perform and document all chemical, mechanical, and biological monitoring of sterilizers and other equipment.
- Respond effectively to emergency case requirements of the surgical team and other departments.
- Assess instruments, components, and supplies for adequate levels required for the assembly of kits, and request necessary replacements in a timely manner.
- Pick supplies and/or instruments for surgical cases utilizing surgeon-specific preference cards.
- Stock adult, pediatric and neonate code carts, intubation boxes.
- Function independently in the absence of the Manager or Supervisor.
- Utilize a variety of computer systems; experience with EPIC and CSIQ/SPM is preferred.
- Assist in the training of new staff and volunteers.
- May rotate between the main SPD, GI, OSC Departments as needed.
- Performs all other duties as needed.
- Room setup to include opening rooms: OFP (scope flush), CO2, suction.
- Daily assignment review and scope management (decontamination or reprocessing).
- Obtain Clean Cart system and set up scopes for the shift; identify gastroscope or colonoscope and related details.
- Maintain scopes in a secure, dry area with controlled access.
- Transport scopes using blue carts and green covered trays with Endo kits.
- Set up scope, sign on to Pro Vation MD, verify patient information, and document scope details.
- Maintain HIPAA standards.
- Utilize PPE appropriately; attach patient and indicator stickers as required.
- Check oral suction use with upper endoscopy; manage waste per procedures.
- Flush Environ-mate systems daily per protocol.
- Sign off on computer and monitor procedures; manage room stock levels.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Education
:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Effective written and verbal communications skills required. Completion of Central Processing Technology Course required.
Experience
:
At least three (3) years of sterile processing experience performing all Sterile Processing functions within an operative setting.
Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations
:
Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing/Distribution Technician (CSPD, or CSPDT) or equivalent required.
Knowledge and Skills
:
Demonstrates proper preparation of instruments for sterilization; practices proper techniques for biological testing of sterilizers; knowledge of steam sterilization and record-keeping; knowledge of Sterrad low-temperature sterilization and record-keeping; proper cleaning, disinfection, and decontamination techniques; ATP testing on endoscopes and surfaces; knowledge of endoscope processor and associated record-keeping; understanding of department distribution systems; proficient use of computer systems; ability to provide cases to the Operating Room;
participation in department quality improvement processes.

Describes routine exposure to noise, chemical fumes, dust, temperature variations, and handling of instruments and supplies; duties involve cleaning with exposure to soil, odors, and bodily fluids.

Includes walking, standing, reaching, stooping, lifting and other activities with varying frequencies; PPE requirements; other sensory and safety considerations.
