OVERVIEWWe are seeking an experienced and dedicated Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to join our school team and lead the coordination of high‑quality provision for pupils with special educational needs. The successful candidate will support the effective implementation of the school’s SEN policy, oversee the development and review of individual support plans/personal learning plans, and maintain accurate SEN records. They will use assessment and data analysis to identify pupil needs, monitor progress, and evaluate the impact of interventions in line with recognised SENCO responsibilities.
The SENCO will work closely with teachers, parents, senior leadership and external agencies—including the Education Authority’s support services, educational psychologists and allied health professionals—to ensure pupils receive tailored, timely support. They will also provide staff guidance and training, contribute to whole‑school inclusive practices and keep up‑to‑date with developments in SEN and relevant professional training to enable every child to reach their full potential.
- Implement the school’s SEN policy and lead the SENCO team.
- Develop, review and monitor Individual Education Plans (IEPs) / Personal Learning Plans.
- Maintain accurate records and produce reports for pupils with SEN.
- Analyse assessment data to identify needs, set targets and evaluate intervention effectiveness.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, senior leadership and external agencies (Education Authority, psychologists, allied health professionals) to provide timely support.
- Lead staff professional development on inclusive teaching strategies and reasonable adjustments.
- Advocate for inclusive practices and promote a positive learning environment for all pupils.
- Plan, prepare and deliver effective teaching and learning.
- Assess, record and report pupil progress and attainment.
- Maintain discipline, health and safety, safeguarding and pastoral care.
- Participate in meetings and contribute to school curriculum, pastoral and administrative decisions.
- Attend public examinations, prepare pupils and manage supervision during examinations.
- Hold a recognised teaching qualification eligible to teach in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
- Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience teaching within KS2 and 1 year’s experience in a composite class.
- Minimum of 1 year’s experience as an SENCO in a primary setting.
- Experience developing and reviewing Individual Education Plans/Personal Learning Plans and carrying out Annual Review process.
- Demonstrable ability to build positive relationships and work collaboratively with professionals to meet the needs of pupils with SEN.
- Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum, Safeguarding, Child Protection policy, SEND Code of Practice and current assessment methods for SEN pupils.
- Effective teaching and classroom management skills, inclusive learning environment, and ability to use a range of strategies to support diverse learners.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience using effective classroom approaches to support SEN pupils.
- Experience monitoring pupil progress, target setting and intervention.
- Experience teaching English as a second language.
- Experience leading after‑school clubs or extracurricular activities.
