Position Statement
The Clinical Manager is responsible for the comprehensive oversight and coordination of daily operations in the Emergency Department. Working closely with the Emergency Department providers the manager ensures that staff deliver high quality, timely, and appropriate care. The Clinical Manager oversees staffing schedules, monitors patient flow, ensures compliance with hospital policies, and leads quality improvement initiatives within the department. Strong leadership and communication skills are essential for guiding teams, resolving conflicts, and collaborating with physicians and other departments to maintain effective operations and excellent patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Makes decisions and provides clear direction during high acuity/high volume times, leading the team through hospital emergencies or managing patient flow during peak hours.
* Monitors and leads quality improvement projects to promote safe, timely, efficient and effective care.
* Facilitates and plans for ongoing professional staff development in collaboration with nursing education.
* Creates a positive culture by communicating expectations and consistently holding staff accountable to policies and processes.
* Participate in committees, departmental and hospital meetings to provide valuable nursing leadership input.
* Collaborates with the house supervisor to assure appropriate staffing for census each shift, optimizing staff-to-patient ratios and maintaining high standards of care.
* Manages employee performance through regular feedback, goalâ€'setting, and timely completion of annual and 90-Day performance evaluations.
* In partnership with Human Resources, conducts difficult and complex conversations with staff related to performance, behavior, attendance, and engagement, using a fair, consistent, and respectful approach.
* Leads, coaches, and mentors Emergency Department staff to achieve high performance, accountability, and professional growth.
* Work closely with community partners to provide safe patient transitions ensuring a high level of competency and expertise.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) required
* Current RN Licensure in Vermont required
* Minimum of three (3) years' recent bedside or Emergency Department experience
* Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
* Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
* Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
* PEARS (Pediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition)
* TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
* NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
* Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and manage staff performance in a fastâ€'paced clinical environment.
* Strong skills in conducting performance evaluations, corrective action, and difficult conversations with professionalism and empathy.
* Ability to build trust, motivate teams, and foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
* Effective conflict resolution, negotiation, and communication skills.
* Ability to manage change, prioritize competing demands, and remain calm during highâ€'stress situations.
