PACU Perdiem RN

Brown University Health invites applications for the PACU Perdiem RN position. Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager (or designee) and within hospital and departmental policies, the registered nurse acts as a patient advocate in the application of the nursing process. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age‑specific needs of the patients.

Responsibilities
  • Recognize and report deviations from patient or established norms.
  • Identify deviations from established norms not related to the patient’s chief complaint and report them.
  • Report patient responses to treatments and document nursing interventions.
  • Provide basic comfort and support based on patient needs.
  • Foster patient and family participation to optimize functioning and daily living activities.
  • Set priorities for individual patient assignments.
  • Seek guidance and resources when necessary in managing patient care.
  • Identify and assess emergency situations, initiate appropriate response and intervention, and plan for potential needs.
  • Define nursing diagnosis and expected outcomes; modify the plan of care based on diagnosis and outcomes.
  • Document nursing assessments and interventions in appropriate forms.
  • Implement interventions and evaluate them against patient outcomes; modify the plan as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of contemporary nursing practice and Rhode Island Nurse Practice Act.
  • Attend training and retraining to keep current knowledge of hospital practices.
  • Utilize established protocols and collaborate with the health team to facilitate therapeutic interventions and desired outcomes.
  • Participate in quality improvement processes and risk management activities.
  • Attend unit‑based or hospital meetings to facilitate patient care management.
  • Work cooperatively and productively within the environment.
  • Integrate physical assessment with nursing assessment and record reviews to develop individualized care plans.
  • Follow all documentation guidelines per policy.
  • Maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Demonstrate self‑direction in advancing clinical and professional competency.
  • Provide functional guidance to LPNs, CNAs, and other licensed personnel as required.
  • Assume shift charge responsibility on an assigned unit when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Rhode Island or Licensure as RN under the Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Graduated from an accredited school of nursing; associate’s required, bachelor preferred.
  • Current BLS certification (American Heart Association).
  • Conformity to the Code of Professional Nurses and understanding of the Rhode Island Nurse Practice Act.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care throughout the life span with sensitivity to cultural diversity.
  • Proficiency as a staff nurse within three months of employment; specialty unit experience preferred.
Physical Requirements

Prolonged standing and walking; exposure to all patient elements; repeated bending, squatting, lifting, and stooping.
