SummaryUnder the general supervision of the Nurse Manager or designee and within hospital and departmental policies, the professional registered nurse acts as a patient advocate in the application of the nursing process. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age‑specific needs of the patients. - Recognizes and reports deviations from patient or established norms.
- Identifies deviations not related to chief complaint and documents patient responses to treatments.
- Provides basic comfort and support according to patient needs.
- Fosters patient and family participation in achieving optimum functioning and performing activities of daily living.
- Sets priorities in individual patient assignments and seeks guidance when necessary.
- Identifies and assesses emergency situations; initiates appropriate response and intervention.
- Plans for potential needs during emergency situations.
- Defines nursing diagnosis and expected outcomes; modifies nursing plan accordingly.
- Documents interventions and evaluates outcomes on appropriate nursing assessment forms.
- Maintains knowledge of contemporary nursing practice within the Rhode Island Nurse Practice Act.
- Attends training to maintain current knowledge of hospital and patient care practices.
- Utilizes established protocols and collaborates with the health team to facilitate therapeutic interventions.
- Participates in quality improvement processes and risk management activities.
- Functions cooperatively in the work environment.
- Integrates physical assessment with nursing assessment and records reviews to develop individualized care plans.
- Follows documentation guidelines per policy and procedure.
- Maintains quality assurance, safety, and infection control per established policies.
- Demonstrates self‑direction in advancing clinical and professional competency.
- Provides guidance to LPNs, CNAs, and other licensed personnel.
- May assume shift charge responsibility, overseeing unit activities and delegating work.
- Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Rhode Island or under the Nurse Licensure Compact.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (associate’s degree required; bachelor’s preferred).
- Current BLS Certification (American Heart Association).
- Conformance to the Code of Professional Nurses and understanding of the Rhode Island Nurse Practice Act.
- Knowledge and skills to provide care across the lifespan with sensitivity to cultural diversity.
Registered nurses should develop general proficiency as a staff nurse within three months of employment. For specialty units, general nursing experience appropriate to the specialty is preferred.
