Summary

The Newport Hospital (NPT) Director of Quality and Safety reports to the Brown University Health Vice President and Chief of Quality & Safety. Under the general supervision of Brown University Health established policies, the Director develops, directs, coordinates, and evaluates comprehensive care transformation activities that improve core measure performance, physician peer review, professional practice evaluation, and patient safety. The role oversees development and implementation of the hospital’s quality, patient safety, patient experience, and performance improvement programs, leading leadership in building educational and improvement initiatives using best practices, rapid‐cycle improvement, performance metrics monitoring, and compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of quality and patient experience specialists to exceed customer expectations.
  • Oversee investigations of critical events, root cause/FMEA projects, and corrective action plans.
  • Provide guidance and feedback to staff and leadership on investigations, performance metrics, and improvement initiatives.
  • Support development of regulatory and accrediting reports, including with the Department of Health, Joint Commission, and other agencies.
  • Serve as liaison to the Medical Staff and quality improvement teams to coordinate patient care process improvements.
  • Direct resource utilization to meet departmental and organizational priorities.
  • Monitor and analyze performance metrics, identify data‑driven improvement solutions, and promote a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Develop and deliver training on customer service and quality programs for front‑line staff.
  • Collaborate with leadership to design and implement patient experience programs aligned with best‑practice models.
  • Ensure compliance with Brown University Health Corporate Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, and shared CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence).
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing or a related healthcare discipline required;
    Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of experience in quality measurement, reporting systems, physician peer review, and process evaluation/improvement.
  • Experience with performance improvement systems, project management, and electronic health record applications.
  • Strong facilitation, analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Certification preferred:
    Six Sigma Black Belt, CPHQ, CPPS, or other quality certifications.
  • Experience supervising up to twenty staff members.
