Psychiatric Technician
Brown University Health is seeking a dedicated Psychiatric Technician to work under the direction of the Registered Professional Nurse and in close collaboration with the Behavioral Health Manager. The role involves direct care of adult patients on the Behavioral Health Unit while ensuring a safe, therapeutic environment. This position provides direct care for the adult population, maintains a safe and therapeutic milieu, and supports treatment planning and execution within unit policies and procedures.
Responsibilities- Actively participate in treatment planning in collaboration with the Professional Nurse.
- Communicate individual treatment plans with multidisciplinary team members.
- Implement treatment plans, maintaining consistent therapeutic limits.
- Provide input during team meetings and document significant patient/family interactions promptly.
- Observe and assist patients in activities of daily living as per the treatment plan.
- Establish therapeutic relationships, encouraging participation in recreational and therapeutic activities.
- Model appropriate staff/patient interactions, maintaining professional engagement.
- Conduct patient rounds to observe and record behavior, reporting any unusual behavior to nursing staff.
- Initiate formal supervision and incorporate feedback for improvement.
- Organize and participate in recreational activities and groups, addressing psycho‑social needs.
- Maintain cleanliness of group rooms and report safety hazards.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
- Manage aggressive or destructive behavior by providing timely therapeutic interventions.
- Assist in placement of patients in seclusion and/or restraints per policy.
- Assist in patient and room searches.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and respect privacy rights.
- BASIC KNOWLEDGE
:
Baccalaureate in Psychology or related field or CNA license with experience working with the behavioral health population. - Current CPR certification.
- Current Brown University Health Crisis Management certification or current enrollment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients across life stages, developmental stages, and cultural patterns.
- EXPERIENCE

Preferred in a healthcare field. - WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
:
General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care. Must be able to walk and remain on feet for a minimum of 4 hours for continuous rounding and safety checks. - INDEPENDENT ACTION
:
Respond to individual patient‑care situations demonstrating knowledge gained through education, certification, and experience. Abnormal situations are referred to the direct supervisor.
$17.00 – $26.60 per hour
