Position Overview

Pipelayer Specialist: A role in the City of Newport News Public Works Department responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining sanitary sewer systems across the city.

Target Salary Ranges
  • Pipelayer: $37,843.00 – $62,441.00
  • Pipelayer Specialist: $39,924.00 – $66,875.00
Typical Day / Responsibilities
  • Read site plans and prepare neighborhoods for new line installations.
  • Use lasergrade equipment to align sections of pipe with precision.
  • Operate excavators, backhoes, dump trucks, rollers, loaders, and advanced surveying tools.
  • Construct manholes from the ground up.
  • Troubleshoot collapsed sewer lines beneath busy roadways, coordinating traffic control and ensuring safe sites.
  • Respond to emergencies and represent the city's commitment to quality and service.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • For Pipelayer: 1-2 years of directly related work experience.
  • For Pipelayer Specialist: 5-7 years of directly related work experience with sanitary sewer assets and 1-2 years of lead worker or supervisor experience.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Training and Certifications
  • Commercial Drivers License (CDL) permit within 60 days of hire.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) training including Incident Command System.
  • Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Flagger and Basic Work Zone Traffic Control training.
  • Physical ability to lift or move items weighing 20–50 pounds.
