As a Pipe Welder
, you will perform multi-pass, all-position fillet and butt welds using both Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) processes. You’ll weld and fuse a range of materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper-nickel
, often in confined or elevated environments. The position requires strong technical ability, attention to detail, and consistency in producing top-quality welds that meet or exceed shipyard and industrial standards.
- Perform multi-pass fillet and butt welds in all positions using SMAW and GTAW processes.
- Fuse inserts and weld carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper-nickel piping systems.
- Conduct mirror welding using SMAW and GTAW techniques in tight or complex spaces.
- Use Oxygen/Propane torches for preheating, heating, and cutting applications.
- Read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and weld symbols to ensure precise execution.
- Verify weld quality using fillet gauges, butt gauges, and six-inch scales
. - Work efficiently in physically demanding environments such as shipboard areas, subassemblies, and elevated staging.
- Maintain accurate records of weld quality, inspection results, and production output.
Candidates must successfully complete the following qualification and testing process:
- Welders Vision Test
- Visual Inspection of Welds – Level I
- Pre-heat and Interpass Test
- Fire Watch CBT
- Torch Safety Test & Practical
- Welding Qualification Tests: 503, 502, 541, 725, 506, 659, 556, 650, 664, and 557
- (Testing duration approximately 2½ weeks)
- All welders must maintain current welding certifications and ensure documentation of qualification is up to date.
- Minimum five (5) years of commercial or naval pipe welding experience.
- Advanced proficiency in SMAW and GTAW welding processes.
- Demonstrated ability to mirror weld using both SMAW and GTAW
- Capable of fusing inserts and working with a variety of metals
- Skilled in reading blueprints, weld symbols, and measuring instruments
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work
- Physically able to work in confined or elevated areas and perform repetitive welding tasks.
This role involves working in industrial or shipyard settings
, which may include confined spaces, elevated platforms, and variable temperatures. Candidates should be comfortable working in physically demanding conditions and following established quality and production standards.
