Departmental ObjectiveIn support of Christopher Newport University’s mission, the dining services aim to provide high quality food and dining experiences, fast and customer-friendly service, and a clean, inclusive atmosphere. The mission emphasizes inclusivity and civic values while delivering outstanding customer-focused services to the university community.
Purpose Of The PositionUnder the direction of the Food Service Manager and First Cook, this position prepares and produces assigned menu items by reading and comprehending recipes. It also assigns and monitors jobs of subordinate personnel and may perform other duties including serving and cleaning.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Related To Position- Ability to read and write
- Demonstrated basic math skills
- Knowledge of cooking methods by reading and converting recipes
- Knowledge of kitchen equipment
- Good organizational skills
- Ability to complete multiple tasks concurrently
- Ability to communicate in writing or verbally to supervisors and subordinates
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures
- Ability to work in congested work areas and areas with wet processes
- Ability to wear protective footwear
- Ability to work from 12 pm – 8:30 pm
- High school graduate or equivalent education and experience that equates to a high school diploma
- Experience in a high volume kitchen environment
- Serv Safe certified or equivalent certified food handler certificate
- Some Culinary Arts School or equivalent practical experience of 10 or more years
- Supervisory experience
- Experience working in a university or institutional setting
- Experience in menu planning and recipe development
- Experience working with commercial kitchen equipment
