Departmental Objective: In support of Christopher Newport University’s mission, the mission of CNU Dining Services is to provide CNU students with the highest quality in food and dining experiences. In doing so, we are committed to providing fast and customer-friendly services and to provide clean and positive atmospheres throughout the Dining Services operations. The mission also emphasizes an inclusive environment that supports places on campus beyond the classroom where intellectual inquiry occurs and social and civic values are fostered.

Dining Services aims to provide meaningful, pleasant, and memorable dining experiences, including special theme meals and events, in support of inclusivity and other civic values of CNU and the Commonwealth. It seeks to deliver high levels of excellence and professionalism in customer-focused services with close attention to detail and a caring approach, aimed at meeting customer needs and achieving high satisfaction.

Purpose of the Position: Under the direction of the DSU Retail Manager and DSU Retail Assistant Managers, this position is responsible for all operations at the Discovery Cafe Grilled station, including but not limited to preparing feature and grill items by reading and comprehending recipes. It is responsible for assigning and monitoring jobs of subordinate personnel (hourlies, students and temps). It will also perform other duties as assigned, including main kitchen production and cleaning.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee all operations at the Discovery Cafe Grilled station, including preparation of sandwich features and grill items.
  • Read and interpret recipes; ensure proper cooking methods and portioning.
  • Assign and monitor duties for subordinate personnel (hourlies, students, temps).
  • Support main kitchen production and cleaning as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Related to Position
  • Ability to read and write, demonstrate basic math skills
  • Supervisory experience in a fast-food restaurant or high-volume production kitchen
  • Knowledge of cooking methods by reading and converting recipes
  • Knowledge of kitchen equipment
  • Good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently
  • Communication skills (written or verbal) with supervisors and subordinates
  • Awareness of hazards such as slippery footing and congested work areas
  • Ability to wear protective footwear
Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required

Education: High school diploma or equivalent education/experience that equates to a high school diploma

Experience: Previous experience in food service;
Previous supervisory experience

Additional Consideration(s)

Education: Serv Safe certified or equivalent food handler program;
Some Culinary Arts School

Experience: Previous experience at a college or university;
Previous supervisory experience in sandwich/deli shops;
Previous supervisory experience in a fast food restaurant;
Previous supervisory experience in a high-volume kitchen in an educational or institutional setting;
Previous experience writing menus and/or developing recipes

Salary Information
