JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY:

A Third-Class Ship fitter is an entry-level or developing tradesperson with approximately one (1) to two (2) years of experience fitting and assembling metal structural components under supervision. This role may lead small tasks involving up to three (3) trade personnel. Must be able to work long hours, including weekends and nights, as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Positions, aligns, fits, and welds parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools
  • Verifies conformance of work pieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes
  • Tack-welds fitted parts together
  • Lays out and examines metal stock or work pieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met
  • Aligns and fits parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers
  • Locates and marks workpiece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications
  • Positions or tightens braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, or bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting
  • Studies engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences
  • Moves parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes
  • Sets up and operates fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, and drill presses, to bend, cut, form, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal components
  • Performs other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to cut/grind in preparation for welding
  • Ability to measure, cut, grind small parts, foundations and other structural members
  • Proficient use of cutting equipment (Plasma Cutter and Oxy/Fuel Torch)
  • Basic reading, interpreting and utilization of blueprints
  • Proficient use of temporary attachments
  • Basic understanding of weld joint design (full and partial penetration welds, and bevels)
  • Proficient in installation and removal of fasteners and rivets
  • Can differentiate base material types and thicknesses
  • Qualified tack welder in common shipboard positions
  • Ability to learn intermediate fitting operations (coping, straightening, carbon arcing)
  • Basic understanding of material fabrication
  • Recognizes tooling needs (Which tool to use for which application)
  • Ability to read ruler/measuring tape
  • Intermediate use of power tools (grinders, reciprocating saws, drills etc.)
  • Intermediate use of hand tools (hammers, punches, etc.)
  • Correct set up of tools prior to use (running lines, drop tests, etc.)
  • Knowledge of power tool safety, (correctly identifying kick direction and pinch points)
  • Intermediate use of positioning equipment (dogs/wedges, rams, saddles)
  • Ability to learn shipbuilding standards (009-12, W1689)
  • Ability to learn basic inspection standards (009-25, 009-06)
  • Understands fire safety principles (hot work tickets, positioning fire watches, 35’ rule, etc.)
  • Ability to navigate onboard vessels to find work areas/backsides of work areas
  • Practical knowledge of industry safety standards/training
  • Requires periodic supervision to accomplish work
JOB REQUIREMENTS

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED and 1 to 2 years of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to gain access to military installations
  • Must be able to pass drug test and background check
