Terminal Manager – Lead and oversee bulk terminal operations, with a primary focus on coal export activities at our Pier IX/X facility in Newport News, Virginia. This role serves as a strategic business leader, risk manager, and employee motivator, responsible for all facets of terminal operations including safety, maintenance, customer relations, financial performance, and regulatory compliance.

The Terminal Manager will lead a multidisciplinary team including operations supervisors, maintenance personnel, customer service representatives, accounting staff, and engineering support. This position also collaborates closely with commercial and finance teams to achieve terminal objectives and maintain operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop supervisory staff to ensure safe and efficient handling of bulk commodities via marine, rail, and truck.
  • Ensure all terminal operations are conducted in a safe, environmentally compliant manner that meets or exceeds customer expectations.
  • Drive operational efficiency and cost control to meet budget targets and maintain profitability.
  • Oversee employee training programs to support onboarding and ongoing development.
  • Serve as a key liaison between customers and the commercial department to support business growth and retention.
  • Manage financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting activities.
  • Monitor and control overtime and other operational expenses.
  • Investigate and follow up on incidents to ensure resolution and continuous improvement.
  • Promote and reinforce Kinder Morgan’s safety culture across all levels of the organization.
  • Participate in regional and corporate initiatives to standardize and improve operational practices.
  • Direct maintenance, engineering, and support teams to ensure optimal terminal performance.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance revenue and reduce costs.
  • Provide 24/7 response to terminal activities as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Position Requirements :
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing bulk terminal operations.
  • Proven leadership experience managing both departmental managers and hourly employees.
  • Strong background in vessel operations, stevedoring, and warehousing.
  • Exceptional organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong customer service focus.
  • Ability to maintain focus and deliver results in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.
  • Self‑motivated with a proactive approach to problem‑solving and team collaboration.
  • Willingness to work extended hours as required.
  • Professional demeanor with a high‑energy, positive attitude.
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
  • Ability to troubleshoot operational issues related to mobile equipment, cranes, and other heavy machinery.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements including DOT, USCG, FRA, FDA, DPPC, TPCA, CGMP, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead safety initiatives and foster a safety‑first culture.
  • Experience managing multimillion‑dollar budgets.
  • Physical ability to navigate terminal environments, including stairs, ladders, uneven surfaces, and lifting/carrying loads.
  • Must be able to wear standard personal protective equipment (PPE).
