The RoleProvides technical support to engineers on a variety of technical tasks. Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes. Produces engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics). Performs detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas; preliminary analyses of data where guidelines are provided in such areas as trajectory adequacy, model dimensional consistency;
and quantitative judgments concerning technical data. Uses a personal computer in performance of analyses and development of documentation/reports. May conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis.
This position will be responsible to collect data, review, coordinate and conduct high pressure air focused test procedures. The job will require hands on deck plate support as well as providing technical guidance and troubleshooting instructions by evaluating vendor furnished equipment, drawings and test procedure requirements. Looking for a self-starter with a questioning attitude to proactively impact the high pressure air test program and maintain a high level of quality while ensuring schedule demands are met.
Missionof Test Engineering
The mission is to operationally validate ship systems by developing, managing and conducting an integrated safety, test, and work control program for non-nuclear systems across all Newport News Shipbuilding product lines. As the test team energizes, tests, and operates shipboard systems in their final configuration, we provide a single point evaluation source for planning, test procedure development, pre-installation bench testing, troubleshooting, repairs, systems enhancements, material sourcing, shipboard testing, operating and certification.
Our team includes engineers, analysts and technicians who are well versed in the design and installation of ship systems and expert in their operation. As an Engineering Technician at Newport News Shipbuilding, you will be an integral part of the hands-on deck plate test team ensuring the United States Navy has advanced submarines and contributing to delivering quality boats.
Associate's Degree and 3 years of relevant experience. One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:
- NNS Apprentice School graduate
- Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
- High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
- High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
- Experience as a foreman, trade, or sailor working High Pressure Air systems, or related technical experience.
- Hands-on experience working with shipboard systems aboard Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carriers or Submarines while either commissioned or undergoing construction/repair.
- Leadership, teamwork, and a questioning attitude. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Thorough knowledge of how to read and interpret Navy Ship System drawings.
- Takes pride both personally and as a team to see work packages through from project start to a quality certified final product deliverable to the customer.
