Statement: This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). A CSA is defined as an official of the institution with significant responsibility for student and campus activities. A CSA must immediately report any crime to the University Police, who will review, evaluate and investigate. Annual training is required by the Department of Education for all CSA personnel.

Chief Objective of PositionThe University Fellow will support Christopher Newport University (CNU) by welcoming, orienting, transitioning and engaging new students to CNU. The Fellow will recruit, interview prospective students, give presentations to campus visitors, and share the CNU story through various mediums to recruit the best prospective students. The Fellow will assist with Admission Officer duties, including reading application files, counseling families through the college search process, assisting with processing and operations, and participating in recruitment events on and off campus.
The Fellow may offer creative and innovative solutions to improve the CNU student experience. This is generally a one-year appointment, unless replacing a vacated position mid‑contract or extending an additional academic year.
- The Admission Fellow will carry out assigned tasks to support new student recruitment initiatives as directed by the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management, Director of Undergraduate Admission, Senior Associate Directors of Admission, and Assistant Directors of Admission.
- Develop and maintain exemplary relationships with prospective students via travel recruitment visits, phone calls, and communications (letters, emails, blogs, chats, virtual college fairs, and other multimedia venues).
- Provide effective communication with administrators and support staff; maintain positive public relations with faculty, staff, students, alumni and community.
- Interview prospective students and provide information to help validate interest in CNU; rate the student for consideration as part of holistic admission and merit scholarship review.
- Represent CNU at college fairs, high schools, and on- and off-campus recruitment events.
- Conduct persuasive information sessions and other presentations to prospective students and families about CNU; conduct first reads of admission files; research, evaluate and suggest ideas for recruitment, enrollment, retention, student success and student engagement initiatives.
- Assist and provide support for university-wide programs including Orientation, Move-In, Freshman Dessert Receptions, Commencement and special Presidential events as requested.
- Promote the mission of Christopher Newport University and adhere to departmental policies; support additional University programs that enhance the student experience (e.g., Signing Day, Senior Week, Commencement, and Admission events).
- This position is designated as a “responsible employee” with authority to redress sexual violence, or to report incidents of sexual violence or student misconduct as required.
- Maintain positive, professional customer service and relations within the office and with all constituencies, including students, faculty, staff, guests and employees. Support the “Student’s First” value and provide service beyond expectations.
- Review and communicate safety issues to ensure a safe and healthy workplace.
- Follow workplace safety regulations and adhere to applicable standards, processes and programs for the position.
- Immediately report unsafe work conditions and incidents to your supervisor and participate in investigations as requested.
