Purpose of Position
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures (MCLL) at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a full-time, non‑tenure‑track Lecturer in Classical Studies, effective August 2026.
We seek candidates with a specialization in the material culture of ancient Rome and a demonstrated ability to teach Latin language courses at all levels. Applicants should be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduates. Primary responsibilities include teaching courses in Latin and Classical Studies and the university’s Liberal Learning Core. Interests in art history, archaeology, digital humanities, study abroad, archaeological site experience, conservation and preservation are welcome.
Qualifications require a Ph.D. in Classical Studies or a closely related field (or a master’s degree for an instructor rank). The teaching load is 4–4. The position may be eligible for promotion to a multi‑year contract or to senior lecturer after a given number of years of service.

Departmental InformationMCLL faculty comprise 15 teacher‑scholars committed to undergraduate education and professional growth. Programs include French, German, Spanish, Ancient Greek, Latin, Italian, Arabic and Chinese. We offer five majors, four interdisciplinary minors and MAT degrees in Spanish and ESL.
