12 Months Fixed Term/ Secondment Opportunity - Maternity Cover

Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (Banding 6 or 7 depending on experience)

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced practitioner to take on this Specialist nursing role working as a key member within the Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Multidisciplinary Team(s). The post requires vision, innovation and the ability to work across professional boundaries, underpinned by a real desire to provide the highest standards of patient care.

In this post you will be developed to work in collaboration with, and autonomously, as part of the Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist Team to help develop and deliver services across organisational, professional and geographical boundaries.

Main duties of the job

The post will involve either delivering at band 7 level or supporting the band 7 CNS in a band 6 position to:

Deliver cancer waiting targets by managing the patient's cancer pathway and work with the patient and local and regional MDTs to action appropriate MDT meeting outcomes to avoid delay.

Assess patients' clinical condition over the telephone and manage symptoms of disease, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or immunotherapy side effects, and provide advice and guidance and primary and secondary care MDT working to prevent admission.

Recognise symptoms of an oncological emergency such as Neutropenic sepsis, Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression, Hypercalcaemia, Supervisor Vena Cava Obstruction through telephone assessment of patient's clinical condition, and expedite appropriate emergency services / admission response and actions.

Organise procedures such as Liver biopsies and support patient during procedure (occasional requirement to recover patient post procedure) Arranging blood transfusions / medication infusions / vital medications / treatment plans, diagnostics

Support patients in breaking bad news clinic.

Provide patient advice on different types of surgery and systematic anti-cancer therapy options available to them, discussing the risks, side effects and support available.

This role will work closely with key areas of the Trust, forging close working relationships with the Trust interventional consultants, visiting consultants from the Cancer Centres, the Medical and Cancer Teams and the Specialist Palliative Care team.

Work closely with MDT in tertiary referral centres.

Provide vital information, signposting, and psychological support (must have advanced communication training) to cancer patients about their disease, treatments, and other holistic impacts e.g financial, psychosocial, lifestyle change, smoking cessation advice financial, undertaking full holistic needs assessment and developing personalised care and support plans.

It is essential that you possess a high level of up-to-date relevant clinical knowledge and experience in caring for cancer patients. With evidence of ongoing continuous professional development. You must be highly motivated with strong leadership and excellent communication skills. Working with the Cancer Management Team, Cancer Multidisciplinary Teams and Clinical Nurse Specialists this post will be responsible for the implementation and assessment of the service against the NHSI quality measures.
