Job Description

Reporting through the Director, Public Works Services and under the direction of the Construction Works Project Manager, the Technical Student – Construction Projects in Public Works Services will be responsible for carrying out various types of inspections on construction projects to ensure conformance with approved permits, project design and specifications, completing daily inspection reports, recording and maintaining field measurements and assisting with traffic related studies.

Job Requirements
  • Enrolled in or recently completed education in a post‑secondary diploma in civil engineering technology or related discipline, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal with a variety of personality types.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction or as part of a team, and to respond appropriately to any situation that may arise.
  • Understanding of soil, concrete, asphalt properties, civil design principles, construction, engineering, traffic analysis and municipal infrastructures.
  • Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public, other Departments and staff.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations, WHMIS, by‑laws and procedures.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet) and AutoCAD.
  • Class G driver’s license in good standing and a reliable vehicle available for corporate business driving to construction sites throughout the Town of Newmarket.
