The role will assist in the development and maintenance of the Connecticut Statewide travel demand model and conduct air quality emissions reduction analyses.

Position HighlightsMonday‑through‑Friday, full time, 40 hours per week, first shift. Located at the DOT Headquarters in Newington (P‑4 bargaining unit). Eligible for telework after successful completion of the working test period.
RoleThe Trainee supports modeling and analytical efforts required by federal and state Clean Air Act regulations and provides data support for executive decision‑makers.
Responsibilities- Assist in preparing demographic, travel demand, and air quality data for grant applications.
- Run the MOVES5 air quality modeling software and support the GHG analysis program.
- Conduct travel demand model runs and maintain the model code base.
- Analyze model outputs for project prioritization and data presentation.
- Maintain functional classification system of Connecticut’s roadways.
- Develop socio‑economic forecasts for the travel demand model.
- Assist with travel demand and quality modeling unit tasks, including data manipulation and quality control.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
- Ability to manipulate and analyze large, complex datasets.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of traveling demand modeling concepts and air quality analysis.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and data related software.
- Master’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Transportation, Planning, GIS, Geography, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Experience with large dataset manipulation, data visualization, and reporting.
- Experience with MOVES5, Microsoft Office 365, ESRI ArcGIS, and related software.
- Experience using U.S. Census Bureau and American Community Survey data.
Eligibility for promotion to Transportation Planner 1 is earned after completing a two‑year training program (one year for bachelor's, potentially shorter for master's). Salary steps: FS 15 Step 1 ($55,328), Step 2 ($57,320), Step 5 ($63,306).
