Job SummaryThis role involves carrying out a wide range of general maintenance tasks across the hospital estate. The Handyperson/Joiner will be part of a professional and proactive Estates Maintenance team, contributing to the upkeep and smooth operation of hospital facilities. The position requires flexibility, initiative, and a willingness to support colleagues across various maintenance disciplines. The successful candidate will demonstrate a broad skill set that enables them to respond effectively to day‑to‑day maintenance needs, be self‑motivated, enthusiastic, and capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
This is a shift‑based role, requiring participation in a 24/7, 365‑day rotating shift pattern, averaging 38.5 hours per week. Reasonable overtime may be required. The primary place of work will be either the Royal Victoria Hospital or Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, with occasional work at other sites with reasonable notice.
The Handyperson/Joiner will undertake a variety of tasks within their skill set, including responding to maintenance requests, performing routine plant checks, assisting with general cleaning duties, supporting other maintenance personnel when needed, and ensuring all work is carried out safely and in accordance with health and safety procedures. The role also involves maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities and plant history, and participating in out‑of‑hours on‑call duties if required.
The post holder must be adaptable and ready to handle new situations as they arise, share knowledge with colleagues and undertake any necessary training to maintain and enhance their skills.
The Handyperson/Joiner is expected to uphold the standards and policies of the organisation at all times. They must be committed to continuous learning and development, ensuring their competencies remain current and relevant.
