Job SummaryNewcastle upon Tyne Hospitals invite applications for a full‑time Catering Supervisor to join the RVI Catering Department, part of the Team of the Year 2022. The role runs 37.5 hours a week, 5 days over a 7‑day rota, with two weekends off each month. Duties include supervising the catering team, managing menus, staffing, health & safety compliance and patient food quality.
MainDuties
- Supervise a catering team of up to 70 staff.
- Coordinate communication between catering, wards and other departments.
- Manage menus in the catering system and ensure they are posted for wards.
- Prepare daily worksheets, rosters, and oversee overtime, holidays and sickness.
- Use in‑house allocation system for pay and holidays.
- Apply HACCP principles and meet all health and hygiene regulations.
- Monitor the patient food belt to ensure quality, presentation and correct delivery.
- Engage with ward staff to resolve food service issues.
- Optimise staffing and resource allocation to meet service demands.
- Conduct staff appraisals, induct new staff, facilitate risk‑assessment training, moving and handling, and first‑aid courses.
- Collaborate with the Diet Chef to meet patient dietary needs and manage allergen information.
- NVQ Level 3 Supervisory Leadership Qualification or equivalent experience.
- Intermediate Food Hygiene Qualification Level 2 and Allergen Qualification or equivalent.
- City & Guilds 706/2 or NVQ Level 3 in Food Preparation (desirable).
- Basic IT skills (Word, Excel).
- Experience in a customer‑focused environment.
- Understanding of confidentiality requirements.
- Previous experience in large‑scale catering and HACCP knowledge (desirable).
- Prioritise workload efficiently.
- Remain calm and respond effectively in challenging situations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Leadership and teamwork capability, able to inspire confidence and influence behaviour.
- Work effectively in hot, pressurised environments.
- Initiative, commitment and self‑motivation.
- Positive, “can‑do” attitude.
The role is suitable for individuals who can commit to a supervisory position within a food service shift, prioritise food hygiene and safety standards, and manage quality control and operational tasks.
