An exciting opportunity has arisen in Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust's (CNTW). The role will be for a Peer Supporter for the Mother and Baby Unit (Beadnell Ward) at St Georges Park Hospital in Morpeth.
The Mother and Baby Unit is a six bedded inpatient specialist perinatal ward, for women suffering with perinatal illness.
The Peer Supporter role is a valuable part of the multi-disciplinary support that the ward provides women and their families.
The role is aimed at someone who has experienced perinatal mental illness and sought support for this.
You will use your knowledge and direct lived experience of having perinatal mental illness, and be able to share this to provide support for the women who are admitted onto the ward and their families.
Main duties of the jobThis is a unique opportunity to work as part of a specialist multi-disciplinary clinical team, utilising your personal experience to:
- Support and engage service users and their families.
- Support women to access various support organisations.
- Facilitate groups for the women and their babies.
- Empower women to have their voices heard in their own care.
- Help staff to understand the challenges that perinatal illness can bring.
This will be a challenging, but rewarding role. The post holder must have to communicate where there are barriers to understanding, and they be able to work as part of a team. They must be confident in working and communicating with people.

As a Peer Supporter you will use these first-hand experiences of living through personal challenges to offer insight, relate to and offer support to other people who are now facing similar challenges to the ones you have faced.

The post will also involve contributing to the continuing development of the Peer Supporter role and linking in with Third sector and/or recovery colleges.

Person Specification Education and Qualification- Good level of secondary education
- Commitment to complete the CNTW Peer Supporter Educational Programme
- Completion of Peer Support Specialist Training or other similar peer support training
- Completion of Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) training
- Completion of WRAP Educator training
- Personal lived experience of secondary mental health services and own recovery journey.
- Understanding of personal values and beliefs
- Good interpersonal and team-working skills
- Ability to share personal story of recovery in a professional manner
- Ability to meet the mobility requirements of the post
