Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced SACT Nurse to progress into a role of a Nurse Practitioner - Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT). This role is a senior position working clinically within SACT day units to support, educate and develop staff nurses within the role.

You will be expected to lead on education and training, supporting new staff and existing staff to enhance their knowledge within the speciality of Oncology/Haematology and more specifically in SACT administration.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role are to support and educate staff nurses within the department through regular direct clinical supervision and hands on clinical working to develop their competence in all clinical skills and SACT administration. Additionally, it is expected that you will lead on providing teaching and education sessions to the nursing team weekly.

Other aspects of the role include:

  • Teaching and liaising with external providers/representatives to develop training for staff
  • Utilising clinical skills to assess patients
  • Non-Medical Authorisation of blood product

We would welcome applications with current working experience in SACT.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Significant experience in Oncology and/or Haematology
  • UKONS SACT Passport
  • Significant experience administering SACT currently
  • Practice Supervisor and Assessor/Mentorship
  • IV Drug Competent
  • Venepuncture Skills

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Accredited SACT course
  • Teaching qualification/course
  • Evidence of audit/service improvement
  • Non-Medical Authorisation of blood products or willingness to undertake
  • IRMER trained or willingness to undertake
  • Clinical Skills Course or willingness to undertake

Job responsibilities

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse practitioner as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to perform a specific technological procedure/s e.g., endoscopy, ultrasound in a defined patient group and/or advanced patient assessment and clinical decision making in a broad patient group.

To work towards the role of an independent nurse practitioner, contributing towards the delivery of a quality service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice:

  • To ensure that the patient is the central focus of a streamlined patient journey ensuring optimal quality of care.
  • Will provide a prompt response to calls from colleagues, prioritising importance and clinical need.
  • Supports the clinical team to manage a defined caseload, activity to include assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment within defined protocols and training.
  • Provide immediate care management of patient including communication of plan to patients and significant others.
  • Review and refer to appropriate person, e.g., AHP, resident medical staff, specialist registrar or critical care outreach team.
