About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Transport Planner to join our Newcastle team, where you will play a key technical role delivering transport planning projects and providing guidance to junior team members. You will apply your technical expertise to support project delivery and participate in client interactions, contributing to innovative and sustainable transport outcomes. The role will involve working across a range of transport planning and modelling tools and platforms, supporting both highways and public transport schemes, and contributing to business case development in line with current DfT guidance.

Key Responsibilities Technical Delivery
  • Support the development and delivery of transport planning inputs, including transport models and forecasting work, for highway and/or public transport schemes.
  • Apply appropriate modelling tools and software (e.g. SATURN, VISUM, VISSIM, AIMSUN and similar) to meet project requirements.
  • Produce technical outputs that support DfT-compliant appraisal, evaluation, and business case development.
  • Ensure modelling and appraisal work is robust, transparent, and suitable for client and stakeholder scrutiny.
  • Support wider transport planning activities, including option development, scheme assessment, and interpretation of modelling outputs to inform decision‑making.
Project Management
  • Manage the delivery of small projects, ensuring outputs meet quality standards, programme deadlines and budget requirements.
  • Play a leading role in the production of high‑quality technical reports and supporting documentation to a professional standard.
  • Support effective project coordination, including task planning, resourcing and progress reporting.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Provide client contact and liaison with appropriate supervision, acting as a trusted point of contact.
  • Present technical findings clearly to a range of audiences, including non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Support workshops, meetings and consultations by providing clear technical advice and insight.
Team Leadership & Development
  • Provide supervision, guidance and mentoring to junior colleagues, supporting their technical development and helping build transport planning and modelling capability.
  • Contribute to team management and line management responsibilities where required.
  • Encourage consistent technical standards, knowledge sharing and collaborative working.
Business Development
  • Support the preparation of competitive technical and fee proposals for transport planning, modelling and appraisal commissions.
  • Contribute to bid writing, work planning and defining appropriate technical approaches and deliverables for new opportunities.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Transport Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Economics or a related subject.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. CIHT, TPS, ICE) and working towards chartership status.
  • Previous experience in transport planning, with a strong track record in delivering consultancy commissions.
  • Proven experience in transport modelling, forecasting and appraisal to support scheme development and investment decisions.
  • Experience managing small projects and contributing to multi‑disciplinary teams, delivering work in line with DfT and HM Treasury guidance where required.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to present technical outputs clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Experience supporting work‑winning activity through contributions to bids, proposals and client relationship development.
What We Offer
