The RoleWe are seeking an enthusiastic, ideally time-served Electrical Technician to join our team in a practical, workshop and laboratory-based role within the School of Engineering. This post focuses on the hands‑on repair, operation, maintenance, and development of electrical facilities.
Based across a range of laboratories and workshops, you will provide high‑quality technical support to enable teaching and research activities, ensuring equipment and facilities are safe, reliable, and fit for purpose. You will be supported by the Technical Team Leader and the School Technical Manager.
Working as part of a team of Electrical and Electronic Technicians, you will be directly involved in the installation, fault‑finding, repair, calibration, and upkeep of laboratory equipment and systems. This includes practical work with test rigs, instrumentation, motors, and AC electronic motor drive systems.

Key responsibilities include:- Providing technical support for teaching and research activities
- Repairing, designing, and supporting equipment related to single and three‑phase control systems, process control, motors, and electronic AC drives.
- Assisting staff and students on the safe use of laboratory test equipment
- Designing, building, and modifying electrical test rigs
- Applying knowledge of electrical power systems and associated safety devices
- Interpreting and working from electrical wiring diagrams, including safety and emergency stop circuitry
- Supporting work with motors, drives, and electrical machines
This is not an electrical ‘installation’ role, you will not be involved in installing building electrical systems or carrying out site‑based electrical work.

- Experience of working in a Laboratory or Workshop environment
- Strong hands on practical knowledge of electrical test equipment including proving units, multimeters, insulation testers, socket testers, and energy meters.
- A good theoretical and practical knowledge of the design, modification, calibration, maintenance, service and repair of electrical equipment.
- Ability to demonstrate a good understanding of safe electrical working practices and a thorough working knowledge of Health and Safety procedures.

- Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Electrical or Electronic Engineering (equivalent to Level
4) or equivalent relevant experience - Certified or willing to work towards BS:7671 IEE 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (course funding will be available)
