Salaried GP - Fixed Term Maternity Cover

We are looking for a salaried GP to provide maternity cover for 9 monthsand deliver 4 sessions a week Weds & Friday from January 2026 to end of September 2026. The sessions are delivered over our two sites, in Kenton and Benwell respectively,depending on the needs of the Rota. Thework timetable should ideally include full days on Tuesdays and Fridays withparticipation in the on-call Rota (1 day per week) and the Care Home Ward Round Rota (one session every 2-3 weeks.)

The surgeries will include clinical admin time as well as protected timefor supervision of the medical students if necessary. The role will also include up to 2 lunchtime house calls that will have been triaged by theOn-call GP.

The On-call GP coversboth sites from 08:30 am-18 pm as the single point of Access and Triage of all housecall requests, Urgent queries from the practice team, community and Hospitalteams as well as complex medication queries. The on-call GP is also responsible for any house calls that need to be triaged and completed after lunchtime.

We offer a competitive salary (both experience and qualifications will be considered), indemnity paid (in addition to salary) and 6 weeks annual leave. We operate a standard BMAcontract which includes protected CPD time pro rata. We support professional development and encourage applications from GPs with special interests.

Betts Avenue is a long-established GP Practice operating over two sites (Kenton and Benwell) in Newcastle upon Tyne.

We are a team of 3 GP Partners supported by 3 salaried GPs (one is currently on maternity leave), 1 long-term Locum GP, 1 Advanced Care Practitioner, 1 Lead practice Nurse, 3 Practice Nurses, 1 HCA as well as an experienced managerial and admin team. We deliver a range of GMS services to a population of approximately 10,800 patients. We also have support from Care-Coordinators, Workflow team, Pharmacy Hub, PCN pharmacists and Technicians, our own Practice Pharmacist, Diabetes Dietitian, Physiotherapists, Mental Health co-ordinators for Adults, Mental Health practitioner for Children and Young People, Paramedics who help us with the house calls and a team of Social Link Workers.

The GPs are also delivering weekly Ward Rounds in two large local Care Homes.

We currently teach Year 5 Medical Students and Nursing Students. Our practice is an active member of the Inner West Primary Care Network, LMC, NGPS and North East North Cumbria ICB.

ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

DESCRIPTION OF ROLE

To provide General Medical Services, at both sites of Betts Avenue Medical Centre, for registered and temporary patients.

CONTEXT OF POST

The post holder will work closely together with the practice team to provide high quality primary care services to the practice population as required by the surgery in line with approved protocols and evidence based medical practice.

RESPONSIBILITIES SPECIFIC TO THIS POST

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical:

• Provide a full range of medical services as defined in the core GMS contract and additional and enhanced services where appropriate.
• Undertake a variety of duties (as agreed) including surgery consultations and Care Home ward, telephone consultations and queries, eConsults, house calls, acute and repeat prescriptions and relevant queries, clinical admin work. Participate in the on-call Rota (one day per week.)
• Make professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation.
• Assess the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.
• Screen patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
• Develop care plans for health, in consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols.
• Provide counselling and health education.
• Refer patients to other care providers as appropriate.
• Record clear and contemporaneous consultation notes according to GMC standards.
• Collect data for audit purposes.
• Compile and issue computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand-written prescriptions whenever possible).
• Prescribe in accordance with the locally agreed prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate.
