Overview

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is expanding and looking for 2 accountants to join the Commissioners’ Advisory Accountant (CAA) team. The role supports HMRC’s accountancy advice in litigation and policy matters, and delivers high-quality accountancy services across the department. The team represents HMRC with external professional bodies such as ICAEW, ICAS and ACCA.

Job Summary

Are you a qualified accountant with strong financial accounting experience from practice or industry? Responsibilities
  • Provide accounting advice for complex accounting issues: analyse relevant facts, accounting frameworks, and, where appropriate, challenge the customer’s accounting analyses.
  • Engage with customers and colleagues to form a view and assess the impact of accounting treatment for tax.
  • Support litigation activity, acting as an expert accounting witness, case accountant, or witness of fact; assist others involved in litigation.
  • Prepare and review professional reports containing factual and opinion evidence; attend case conferences, meetings and court with professionalism, integrity and independence.
  • Develop and provide high-quality training to accountancy and tax professionals; ensure knowledge transfer and follow-up support to delegates.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues, fostering capability development and professional growth.
  • Share knowledge and best practice, leveraging innovative methods and digital tools to enhance efficiency and consistency.
  • Demonstrate leadership and credibility to engage with collaborators including agents, tribunals, colleagues, customers, and senior HMRC officers.
Person specification and

Essential Criteria

This role requires strong financial accounting post-qualification experience, gained in practice, industry, public sector or private sector, with a range of stakeholders. The following should be demonstrated:

  • Experience working on complex technical financial accounting matters, including analysing and interpreting financial records, preparing or reviewing financial statements, and considering appropriate accounting treatment of various transactions.
  • A clear understanding of accounting principles and the application of UK GAAP.
  • Strong communication skills, including delivering reports or briefings to senior stakeholders; commercial knowledge and understanding of how businesses operate, including accounting systems.

Essential qualifications:
Full and complete qualification from, and continuing membership of, at least one of the following professional accounting bodies: ICAEW, ICAS, CAI, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA. Part-qualified accountants are not eligible. You will need to show evidence of qualification and membership at interview.

Further Information

There may be a need to travel across the UK with occasional overnight stays for business purposes.

These sites are not long-term HMRC locations and may require moves to new buildings in the future, subject to location strategy and policies.
