Job Summary

Teach migrant preschool students in pre-literacy skills, fine motor skill development, and social skills using culturally appropriate strategies; design and adopt appropriate curriculum materials/ assess student progress; supervise educational assistant; maintain classroom discipline; present program for parent night; communicate with parents as needed. Assist students in the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, physical, emotional, and psychological growth and maturation.

Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Appropriate instructional techniques for language minority students;
  • Understanding of the experiences, working, and living conditions, language, and social and cultural issues affecting migrant students and families;
  • Specific curriculum content and best instructional practices for working with preschool children.
  • Lesson plan development;
  • Implementation of learning activities;
  • Behavior management;
  • Assessment;
  • Teaching to individual student levels;
  • Basic computer literacy.
Ability to
  • Design curriculum and assessment tools for use with migrant students;
  • Fluent English;
  • Demonstrated abilities in classroom organization and behavior management;
  • Native fluency in Spanish (speaking, reading and writing);
  • Communicate orally and in writing in both Spanish and English;
  • Represent the program to migrant students and parents;
  • Maintain accurate records;
  • Advocate for the student in the home and school settings;
  • Build relationships with students, parents, and staff;
  • Work with a diverse population of students and parents;
  • Flexible and willing to do a variety of jobs to meet deadlines and complete all required training.
  • Requires native fluency in Spanish and excellent communication skills with speakers of both English and Spanish.

Experience: Experience in a preschool setting, native fluency in Spanish and excellent communication skills with speakers of both English and Spanish preferred.

Education: Two years of college, associate’s degree or passing score on a para-professional exam in reading, writing and math as required by federal law; two years successful experience teaching migrant students preferred.

Certification

Required:

Medic First Aid Card;
Valid Oregon Driver's License and automobile insurance in order to provide own transportation.

Essential Job Functions
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and times as designated.
  • Identify and recruit migrant families for program participation.
  • Assist with the enrollment of students and the collection of data.
  • Collect and maintain all necessary student and program data as required by the Migrant Education Services Center (MESC).
  • Plan a program of study that meets the interests, needs and abilities of the students and follows established curriculum as written by the district and the state.
  • Design or adapt curriculum and assessment materials as needed for use with migrant students.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is appropriate to the maturity level and interests of the students.
  • Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of the supervisor.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent within the limitations of the location and resources provided by the district.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral process of the students.
  • Understand the social and cultural elements affecting migrant students and their families.
  • Translate (Spanish/English) preschool information for parents in both oral and written form as necessary.
  • Cooperate with other staff members.
  • Attend staff meetings and other meetings as required.
