The Department of Biological Sciences is a teaching and research department that offers multiple educational, research and outreach programs in alignment with core guiding principles of Rutgers University – Newark. Important to the department mission is its contribution to education that supports and guides a large robust population of undergraduate students preparing for careers in healthcare professions as well as academic and private sector biomedical fields.
Additionally, the department offers Ph.D. and MS graduate programs that provide advanced scholarly and research training in Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology.
- Perform laboratory experiments using established techniques of cellular and molecular biology, including methods to analyze proteins and DNA derived from Drosophila and
E. coli. - Carry out molecular and biochemical work, fly genetics and dissection, fly husbandry, tissue preparation, and optimal imaging.
- Use biochemical purification techniques, including immunoprecipitation and immunoblotting.
- Make media and solutions.
Minimum
Education and Experience:
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a scientific/technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests, or other technical work may be substituted for the degree.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree (BS/BA); completion of coursework in Cell Biology and Genetics.
- Wet‑lab bench work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with a genetic model organism, media and solution‑making skills, molecular biology experience, and familiarity with biochemical procedures.
Equipment Utilized:
- Microsoft Word, Excel, Image J/Fiji, Graph Pad Prism, Mac Vector, dissecting microscopes, epifluorescence microscopes, CO2 cylinders, centrifuges, gel imaging docs, spectrophotometers, plate readers, and any other equipment, software, or materials needed to support effective performance.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Laboratory environment.
- Must be able to comfortably lift and move 50 pounds or less.
