Overview

The Department of Biological Sciences is a teaching and research department that offers multiple educational, research and outreach programs in alignment with core guiding principles of Rutgers University – Newark. Important to the department mission is its contribution to education that supports and guides a large robust population of undergraduate students preparing for careers in healthcare professions as well as academic and private sector biomedical fields.

Additionally, the department offers Ph.D. and MS graduate programs that provide advanced scholarly and research training in Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology.

Posting Summary

Rutgers University‑Newark (RU‑N), an urban public research university and anchor institution located in Newark, New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Assistant in the Department of Biological Sciences. The position reports to the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Friedman laboratory and its primary role is to assist the PI and laboratory personnel in conducting basic scientific research.

Responsibilities
  • Performing multistage purifications, other assays, and tests.
  • Propagating specimens and cell cultures.
  • Preparing tissues, chemicals, and animals for testing.
  • Maintaining records.
  • Providing general organization and support of the laboratory.

The position is dependent on adequate external funding.

Salary Details

$42,000 – $47,000 per year. The final salary offer may be determined by candidate’s qualifications, experience, expertise, and availability of department or grant funds. Market benchmarks and internal equity are considered.

Qualifications

Required:
Bachelor’s degree in a scientific/technical discipline or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests. Knowledge, skills, and abilities include regular use of laboratory equipment such as cryostats; familiarity with related software and specialized materials.

Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, biological sciences, or a related field with relevant laboratory research experience.
