Position: Research Assistant (Multiple Hires)

Overview

Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution located in Newark, New Jersey, is seeking a Research Assistant (Temporary) for the Joseph

C. Cornwall Center for Metropolitan Studies. The position will report to the Sr. Program Manager and support the Center’s research projects and initiatives. The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented, responsive critical thinker with experience conducting research in and studying the social sciences (sociology, social or cultural psychology, social work, economics, education studies, political science, or an interdisciplinary field).

Responsibilities
  • Qualitative and quantitative data collection (e.g., ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, surveys) and analysis.
  • Proofreading, editing, and preparation of grant applications, manuscripts, presentations, protocols, and reports.
  • Marketing the Center’s projects and programming (e.g., flyer, newsletter, and report design; e‑mail and phone correspondence; general promotion).
  • Organizing public events around research projects, including booking space, speaker coordination, and logistics.
  • Other duties as assigned.
FLSA Status

Non‑exempt

Salary Details

$18–35 per hour. The final salary offer may be determined by candidate qualifications, experience, expertise, and available grant or departmental funds. Market benchmarks and internal equity are also considered to ensure fair compensation.

Position Status

Part‑time, 19.75 hours per week.

Work Arrangement

The position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement under Rutgers Policy 60.3.22. This arrangement is part of a pilot program effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024 and is not guaranteed beyond that date. Temporary Staff Appointment – Hourly

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Up to two years of relevant experience in an administrative function, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong foundation in qualitative and quantitative research methods and measurements.
  • Experience using data analysis software such as R, SPSS, Stata, ATLAS.ti, Dedoose, MAXQDA, NVivo, etc.
  • Experience using graphic design software to prepare marketing materials.
  • Experience writing for a variety of audiences.
  • Familiarity with IRB and human subjects procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous research assistant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Experience conducting qualitative research, including interviews, coding, and/or document review.
  • Experience analyzing quantitative data and developing charts, graphs, and other visualizations.
  • Capacity and willingness to learn new software, work routines, and research methods.
  • Ability to work independently and accurately without direct supervision.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Responsiveness; the RA should be willing to respond to e‑mail within 24 hours unless prior arrangements exist.
  • Master’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Standard office setting; occasional travel for events or fieldwork may be required.
