Title:

Post Doctoral Research Associate Department:

Chemistry and Environmental Science

Reports To:

Assistant Professor Position Type:

Staff

Position Summary:

We are looking for a prospective postdoctoral researcher who will develop novel photoactivated tools and use computational approaches to answer questions about chemical reactivity and organic reaction mechanisms in the field of polysulfide chemistry. The project will require the synthesis, photophysical characterization, and live‑cell imaging of novel photoactivated donors of reactive sulfur species, important intermediates in biosynthetic pathways. In parallel, the researcher will use Density Functional Theory (DFT) to explore the reaction pathways of these intermediates under biological conditions and relate their findings to known reactions and systems.

Essential Functions:

  • Work under the supervision of the PI.
  • Perform organic synthesis, purification, and characterization of novel photoactive molecules; conduct photophysical characterization and study their behavior in live cells.
  • Prepare and submit computational studies using state‑of‑the‑art software such as Gaussian 16 and ORCA.
  • Analyze data, solve chemical or computational issues, write manuscripts, reports, or tutorials, and present findings at local and regional meetings.
  • Supervise mentees including junior graduate students, undergraduate students, or high‑school students, and work in a highly collaborative environment.
Additional Functions:
  • Perform managerial duties such as safety training and inventory/ordering management.
  • Generate new material for the Visualize Organic Chemistry platform.
Prerequisite

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in organic chemistry with experience working with organosulfur compounds and/or photoactive molecules.
  • Self‑motivated, well‑organized, and resourceful.
  • University may grant exemption if the candidate demonstrates an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing them for success in the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with computational studies of organic mechanisms using DFT.
  • Experience with live‑cell experiments (preferred, but not required).
