The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of School Nurse within the Office of Early Childhood. (Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval)

Qualifications and Requirements
  • An appropriate New Jersey Department of Education Standard Certificate or an Emergency license as deemed necessary.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, unless specified otherwise by the New Jersey Department of Education.
  • Current New Jersey registered professional nurse license issued by the New Jersey State Board of Nursing.
  • Preferred minimum of five (5) years successful experience as a registered nurse.
  • Bilingual; able to read, write, and speak English. Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Creole is a plus.
Basic Functions and Responsibilities
  • Develops comprehensive health records for new students, including health history, immunization data, and referrals.
  • Performs routine screenings of vision, hearing, weight, blood pressure, and dental checks; refers students when deviations are detected.
  • Interprets physical examination findings and promotes healthy habits among students.
  • Provides emergency medical care for students, staff, and faculty.
  • Counsels parents, teachers, and students on medical and health information.
  • Conducts tuberculin screening programs for staff and students as mandated.
  • Reviews annual medical records to monitor immunization status.
  • Provides input into health education programs and participates in in‑service instruction.
  • Assists in planning and maintaining a safe and healthful school environment.
  • Collaborates with community agencies on family and community health matters.
  • Dispenses medication prescribed by a physician following Medical Director guidelines.
  • Serves on committees within the school as deemed necessary.
  • Administers prescribed treatments and ensures compliance with care protocols.
  • May be requested to fulfill any nursing function within the scope of the New Jersey Nurse Practice Act.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Director or designee.

Reports to:

Executive Director of Health Services

Salary, Employment Period and Union Affiliation
  • Annual Salary: $70,000 – $114,750 (plus $3,000 stipend)
  • Employment Period:
    Ten (10) months
  • Union Affiliation:
    Newark Teachers Association (NTA)
