Posting SummaryUGHC is seeking a Part‑Time Mental Health Staff Nurse (RN) for the Northern State Prison in Newark, New Jersey. The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health‑care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. The role involves working closely with health‑care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment, providing integrated patient care and supporting team leadership responsibilities.
Duties- Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of inmates, including adults (18‑64 yrs) and geriatrics (65+ yrs).
- Uses psychiatric nursing standards and classification of mental disorders to develop inmate treatment plans with specific goals and interventions tailored to each inmate’s needs.
- Implements nursing actions that promote, maintain or restore physical and mental health for all age groups.
- Evaluates inmate responses collaboratively with multidisciplinary care providers to ensure quality inmate care.
- Performs additional duties related to the milieu and its safety, as documented in required paperwork and supervisory observations.
- Assumes responsibility for continuing education and professional development and contributes to coworkers’ growth.
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in New Jersey.
- Minimum of one (1) year of psychiatric nursing experience.
- CPR Certification (required).
- Valid Driver’s License (requires own vehicle or alternative transportation between sites).
- Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.

Salary Range: $37.23 – $54.05 per hour (mid‑range $46.54)
Physical DemandsFirst responder must be able to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes and lift/carry an emergency treatment bag up to 45 lb, assist and rotate patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 lb).
Special ConditionsMust be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
