University Correctional Healthcare (UCHC) is seeking a Part Time Mental Health Staff Nurse (RN) for the Northern State Prison in Newark, New Jersey. The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of healthcare needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus, working with healthcare professionals and security officers in a correctional environment. The role frequently follows nursing protocols and can act as a team leader as assigned, demonstrating competency in assessment and identification of the psychological and physical health of adults (18 to 64 years) and geriatrics (65+).
The nurse identifies inmate-centered goals and nursing objectives and implements prescribed interventions and solutions.
- Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of inmate-patients, including adults and geriatrics, within the correctional system framework.
- Uses psychiatric standards of nursing practice and classification of mental disorders to develop inmate treatment plans with specific goals and interventions unique to each patient’s needs.
- Implements nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore physical and mental health of all age groups.
- Evaluates inmate responses in collaboration with multidisciplinary care providers to ensure quality inpatient care.
- Performs additional duties directly related to the milieu’s safety, as demonstrated by documentation and supervisory observations.
- Assumes responsibility for continuing education and professional development and contributes to the professional growth of co‑workers.

Qualifications- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.
- Minimum of one (1) year of psychiatric nursing experience required.
- CPR Certification required.
- Valid Driver’s License required. Must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.
- Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or its equivalent preferred.
As a first responder, must possess the capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes, lift and carry an emergency bag that can weigh up to 45 pounds, and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).
