Job Overview

University Correctional Health Care (UCHC), part of Rutgers University, offers excellence in physical, mental health, dental, and sex offender treatment services for individuals involved in the New Jersey criminal justice system.

Posting Summary: Rutgers University Correctional Health Care seeks a Part‑Time Staff Nurse to work at Northern State Prison in Newark, NJ. The Staff Nurse uses the nursing process to provide ambulatory care with a primary focus on inmates in the New Jersey Department of Corrections.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of resident patients, including adolescents (13–17 years), adults (18–64 years), and their families within the framework established by the correctional system.
  • Performs assessments of resident patients in initial intake area, health‑care unit for sick call, emergency situations in housing, chronic‑care clinics, and infirmary.
  • Works with a variety of health‑care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment.
  • Identifies inmate‑centered goals and nursing objectives; implements prescribed interventions and solutions for identified problems.
  • Plans nursing care by identifying resident needs based on assessments; makes appropriate, timely referrals and initiates nursing care based on institutional policies and procedures.
  • As team leader or charge nurse, delegates duties to other health‑care team members based on skill, knowledge, and experience; guides the provision of care by others.
Qualifications

Minimum

Education and Experience:

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
Certifications & Licenses
  • License to practice in the State of New Jersey.
  • CPR Certification (required).
  • Valid Driver’s License (required). Must possess own vehicle or have alternative means of transportation between sites.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a correctional setting preferred.
Physical Demands & Work Environment

As a first responder, the successful candidate must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. They must be physically able to lift and carry upstairs an emergency treatment bag weighing up to 45 pounds and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).

Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
