Senior Director of Development, RU-Newark

Overview

Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President, Development for Rutgers University Foundation (RUF) at Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N), the Senior Director of Development will lead a major gifts fundraising program for the School of Arts & Sciences Newark and garner support for campus-wide active fundraising areas while proactively managing a major gift donor/prospect portfolio.

• Manage a portfolio of major gift ($25,000+) prospective donors, corporations, and foundations, with independent responsibility to develop and execute strategies leading to successful cultivation and solicitation activities
• Work within the RUF prospect management and tracking system, following all protocols for visits and solicitations
• Identify and prioritize funding opportunities with deans, faculty chairs, and other university administrators to generate new gifts and commitments
• Establish a resource network in the community to identify and cultivate donor prospects, including working with volunteers, faculty, and development staff to identify ability, and interest areas of major gift prospects
• Foster an environment for successful fundraising in Newark by providing on-going information for academic leadership and administration regarding fundraising initiatives and by preparing deans, faculty chairs, and other university administrators to participate effectively in cultivation and solicitation activities
• Work in collaboration with other Directors of Development and the Corporate and Foundation Relations Director
• Seek philanthropic support for Active Fundraising Areas for RU-N
• Other duties as assigned

• Execute a comprehensive department/project/program strategy
• Lead a complex and/or multiple comprehensive fundraising units
• Demonstrate ability to successfully manage and lead a team (and/or staff volunteers) in a way that maximizes potential of each team member
• Work closely with unit leadership

• Manage a team and projects with minimal oversight
• Set goals, manage budgets, and meet deadlines for themselves and the team, if applicable
• Manage a personal major gift donor/prospect portfolio with a primary focus on securing gifts at or above the $500K level and a personal fundraising goal of $2M

• Able to partner with other leadership across the organization
• Effectively up managing your supervisor and University partners across the enterprise
• Able to create, deploy and execute projects with increasing levels of autonomy
• Set direction and approach in partnership with assigned RU leader's vision
• Able to adapt to changing situations and different fundraising partners

• Demonstrate an ability to set priorities and determine strategy for multiple units/departments including staffing and budgets
• Manage the employee experience for a department/program
• Develop and submit written proposals, budgets and other collateral materials as needed for securing significant philanthropic investments
• Demonstration of aligning donor intent to university priorities

Bachelor's degree and/or 8+ years of professional experience in fundraising, alumni relations, non-profit organizations, event planning, higher education, or related fields.

This position requires clarity of focus while juggling complex projects or deadlines with little physical effort. Will work evenings, weekends, or odd hours to meet resource-raising commitments. Typical working conditions with an absence of disagreeable elements. This position requires some early mornings and late evenings to accommodate meetings, travel, events, and external constituents’ schedules.

This is classified as an office-centric hybrid position. Colleagues working under an office-centric hybrid arrangement have a primary workstation in a university or foundation location and are in the office between one and five days a week. The frequency with which they are present in the office depends on their role and function and the interdependency of other functions.
