Overview

The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, covering planning, construction, facilities, public safety, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.

The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) requests an Operating Engineer III to operate and maintain stationary steam boilers and auxiliary equipment at the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) Newark გამოცდილcliffe.

• Operates boilers and pressure vessels at maximum efficiency to minimize energy consumption.
• Performs comprehensive tests, records fuel consumption, pressure, draft, temperature, flow and other parameters.
• Adds chemicals to treat steam, water and fuel as required.
• Ensures compliance with applicable regulations.
• Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
• Performs maintenance duties directed by the Plant Manager or Senior Shift Supervisor.
• Makes continual inspections of equipment and systems and reports conditions to the Chief Engineer and Senior Shift Supervisor.
• Is available to cover shifts in emergencies.
• Completes and maintains logs, records and files of all auxiliary plants; exchanges detailed information with relieving operators; inspects equipment, learns alternate maintenance methods, analyzes problems and implements corrective action.
• Adheres to Rutgers’ compliance standards, including the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
• Possesses knowledge of computerized monitoring and work‑order systems.

• A minimum of one (1) year of experience operating steam or hot water boilers and auxiliary equipment related to boiler plant operations.

• A blue‑seal certification is required.

• Experience with chiller plants.
• Computer knowledge in CMMS and plant monitoring.

This position requires the individual to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk or hear and taste or smell over 2/3 of the time; climb or balance up 2/3 of the time; lift more than 100 pounds 1/3 of the time, up to 25 pounds 2/3 of the time, and up to 100 pounds 1/3 of the time.

The role involves wet or humid conditions, high precarious places, extreme heat, exposure to fumes, smoke, toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock risk, and vibrations. Protective equipment is required and provided. An annual physical exam and hearing test are offered.
