Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Specialist Poison Information V for the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System/Preventive Medicine and Community Health for the New Jersey Medical School.

• Respond to telephone calls regarding appropriate care and treatment for acute poisoning and toxic exposures.
• Demonstrate understanding of principles of toxicology when suggesting patient management or providing poison information.
• Operate the telephone system, microcomputers and their peripherals and backup systems.
• Obtain a complete history specific to each call.
• Assess the severity of calls to the poison center and determine appropriate follow‑up.
• Listen well and allow callers to define the problem to efficiently manage and coordinate care.

• Minimum education:
  
  bachelor’s degree in a health science discipline.
• Candidates must be a Nurse, Pharmacist, or Physician.
• Successful completion of all orientation programs.
• Related experience and/or education may be substituted for the requirements on a year‑for‑year basis.

• Detailed knowledge of pharmaceuticals and toxicological principles plus knowledge of HIV/AIDs/STD’s, their symptoms, treatments and testing.
• Excellent oral, written and keyboard skills and proficiency with computers and telephone systems.

• Some clinical experience is preferred but not required.
• Experience in Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, and Critical Care is preferred.

• Work in a call‑center environment, which may require standing or sitting for long periods while using a computer and phone.

• Ability to rotate all shifts (day, evening and overnight, weekends and holidays); shifts may be up to 12.5 hours in duration.
