Director, Milt Hinton Institute

Subject to the policies and management direction established by the Vice President for Arts Education, the Director is responsible for the artistic oversight of NJPAC's Milt Hinton Institute for Studio Bass (MHISB) and for the program's strategic growth toward national visibility and recognition.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Responsible for oversight and fulfillment of the artistic vision of the Milt Hinton Institute for Studio Bass (MHISB)
  • Work in collaboration with the teaching artist faculty and curriculum coordinator to execute the mission and vision of the camp experience, including ensuring the hiring and training of appropriate teaching faculty, accompanists and special guest artists for the project.
  • Oversee the creative process, final works, and production elements for each program performance in conjunction with Sr. Director, Performances and Special Initiatives, NJPAC.
  • Responsible for faculty oversight to ensure the implementation of the program meets artistic and educational program goals
  • Recruit students to participate in the program and post program marketing on social media during the recruitment period of January - June 2026.
  • Act as a youth mentor with strong leadership skills and sensitivity, responding to potential incidents and behavioral challenges
  • Daily administration and oversight of programs when in session
  • Attendance at all summer sessions, rehearsals, and meetings unless mutually agreed upon and in accordance with this agreement
  • Attending Planning Meetings with NJPAC Admin Staff, including Sr. Director, Performances & Special Initiatives.
  • Determine Ensemble Placements with Director, Milt Hinton Institute for Studio Bass.
  • In collaboration with the Director, MHISB, the coordinator will oversee the creative process, final works, and production elements for each program performance, in conjunction with the Sr. Director, Performances and Special Initiatives, NJPAC.
  • Creation and implementation of daily schedule and faculty assignments in collaboration with the Curriculum Coordinator and the NJPAC Arts Education Dept administrator
  • Conduct and review student placement audition materials to provide appropriate ensemble placement appropriate to the student's learning style and level of aptitude of the instrument.
  • Active identification and cultivation of partnerships to advance the growth and visibility of Milt Hinton Institute for Studio Bass program.
  • Advise with program development, curriculum and enrichment, including arranging for a trip for students to see a jazz performance during the program.
  • Maintenance of regular communication with the Sr. Director, Performances and Special Initiatives.
  • Advise on music selection for ensembles, in collaboration with the Curriculum Coordinator, MHISB and camp faculty.
  • Artistic lead on evening faculty performances, Milt Hinton Day (July 22, 2026) and the culminating student concert on the final day (July 26, 2026).
