Position SummaryThe Maker Mentor I provides instructional and technical support to users of the NJIT Makerspace through hands‑on training, supervision, and fabrication assistance. This position plays a foundational role in ensuring that users learn to safely and effectively operate Makerspace equipment, including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, and basic shop tools. Maker Mentor I employees deliver formal training sessions, supervise users during open lab hours, assist in developing instructional materials, and help maintain equipment and work spaces.
They support students, faculty, and staff in transforming design concepts into physical prototypes while upholding the highest standards of safety and professionalism. This role emphasizes skill development, collaboration, and continuous learning as part of a technical education environment that encourages innovation and creativity.
- Deliver formal training sessions and assist in developing instructional materials.
- Supervise users during lab hours to ensure safe and effective equipment operation.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot basic fabrication and prototyping tools.
- Support students, faculty, and staff in design and fabrication projects.
- Enforce safety standards and assist with policy implementation.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, industrial design, or a related field.
- 0-2 years of relevant hands‑on or instructional experience.
- Proficiency in basic fabrication tools and digital design workflows.
- At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the hourly rate for this position is $35.00 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
