Teacher of Architecture – Newark School of Architecture and Interior Design (SY2026-27)

Position Overview:

The Newark Board of Education invites qualified individuals to serve as Teacher of Architecture at the Newark School of Architecture and Interior Design. The role involves developing and implementing a comprehensive architecture curriculum that aligns with district and New Jersey State vocational standards, ensuring student achievement and certification success.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • An appropriate New Jersey Department of Education Standard Certificate, Certificate of Eligibility (CE), or Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) as required by the NJ DOE.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (preferred).
Basic Functions and Responsibilities
  • Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students, developing skills in basic and advanced architecture techniques, tools, and application of architectural principles.
  • Prepare students to apply technical knowledge and understanding of scientific principles, mathematical concepts, and communicative and technical skills, including CAD, in a professional context.
  • Implement a comprehensive architecture curriculum and maintain familiarity with district and State vocational standards and certifications.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials that translate to practical learning experiences.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, modifying instruction to meet individual student needs, including those with special needs.
  • Evaluate student progress through assignments, projects, and exams, and prepare progress reports.
  • Continue professional development by attending seminars, workshops, and professional meetings to stay current with industry trends and technologies.
  • Coordinate with other professional staff members, participate in faculty meetings and committees, and assist in related instructional planning.
  • Instruct pupils in proper care and use of textbooks, equipment, and materials to ensure safety protocols.
  • Enforce all safety protocols in classroom and lab settings and conduct regular safety inspections of tools, equipment, and facilities.
  • Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized, small-group instruction, hands‑on learning, and student engagement.
  • Ensure student conduct conforms to school standards and maintain behavioral expectations.
  • Select and requisition books, instructional materials, equipment, and maintain inventory records.
  • Maintain professional competence through participation in in‑service and self‑selected professional growth activities.
  • Develop and promote student leadership, civic responsibility, and citizenship through Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) activities and conferences.
  • Prepare students for work‑based learning opportunities, as appropriate.
  • Supervise out‑of‑classroom activities for pupils during the assigned working day.
  • Plan and coordinate the work of aides, teacher assistants, and other paraprofessionals.
  • Communicate with parents and pupil personnel staff regarding individual pupil progress and development.
  • Maintain attendance accounting and business service as required.
  • Develop and participate in the sponsorship of student activities and faculty committees.
  • Serve as a resource person on an interdepartmental level to relate aspects of the subject area to other disciplines.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with students and parents about academic and behavioral progress.
  • Perform other duties and tasks assigned by the supervisor.
