Per Diem Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Newark, DE Summary

The Nurse in Training is responsible for all departmental functions aligned with PM Pediatrics's mission, vision, and goals. The Nurse in Training role is an opportunity for nurses to apply and grow their skills in a pediatric urgent care setting and assist with primary patient care based on individual patient needs within their scope of practice under the mentor's direct supervision.

This position maintains effective working relationships with all customers, including patients/families, physicians, employees, volunteers, and vendors.

Description

Working alongside an assigned mentor, the Nurse in Training will review and learn the following skills. Upon completion of the six-week program, the candidate will demonstrate the ability to work within the Urgent Care multidisciplinary team.

  • Triage and perform vitals using manual and automated methods
  • Sterile urinary catheterization
  • Venipuncture and IV insertion in all age groups
  • Administration of medication via IV (pump, and push), oral, rectal, subcutaneous, otic, IM, and inhaled
  • Fluid infusion via gravity, buretrol, and rate controlled device
  • Safely positioning and holding for procedures (splinting, foreign body removal, and suture repair)
  • Perform basic splinting (i.e., posterior leg splint, volar splint, thumb spica, etc.)
  • Obtaining EKG in all age groups
  • Wound irrigation
  • Setting up and maintaining a sterile field, including donning and doffing sterile gloves and PPE

The Nurse in Training will also be able to confidently and competently assess the following:

  • Heart and lung sounds
  • Hydration status and orthostasis
  • Wounds and injuries
  • Neurological changes and seriously ill children

The Nurse in Training will:

  • Be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of critical presentation
  • Have an understanding of the correct dosage, administration, interactions, and mechanism of action for medications prescribed for treatment within the Urgent Care setting
  • Be confident and competent to handle a resuscitation should the need arise and participate in mock codes
  • Become familiar with and utilize atraumatic methods to ensure a good visit for pediatric patients
  • Be an integral part of the care plan team and assist with patient care within the scope of practice
  • Keep rooms stocked with adequate medical supplies, maintain instruments, and prepare sterilized tools as required
  • Practice standard safety practices and precautions
  • Help patients in distress by responding to emergencies and promptly notifying the physician
  • Establish effective rapport with clients, families, other employees, and physicians
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following and enforcing standards and procedures, complying with legal regulations
  • Maintain patient confidence and protect operations by keeping patient care information confidential in compliance with HIPAA regulations
  • Update knowledge by participating in continuing education requirements and opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations
  • Assist patients with complaints and take an active role in service recovery when needed
Qualifications
  • Active state nursing license or active compact state licensure from the state you reside
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) is required, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within six months of hire
  • Basic knowledge of medical practice and terminology, clinic's processes, and procedures
  • Basic knowledge of medical equipment and instruments
  • Ability to use sound reasoning and judgment and act calmly in emergencies
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and nonverbally
