Design Estimator
Newark, Doncaster, Essex
Full Time | Hybrid Working Available
Up to £55,000 + bonus
Reporting to the Estimating Manager, the Design Estimator will be responsible for the technical and commercial preparation of tenders for specialist ground engineering projects.
The role requires a strong understanding of geotechnical principles, constructability, risk assessment, and cost planning within a ground engineering environment.
Design EstimatorKey Responsibilities
- Review tender documentation
- Develop preliminary tender designs
- Undertake quantity take-offs and build up detailed cost estimates
- Liaise with in-house design teams, temporary works engineers, and operational staff to ensure buildable and cost-effective solutions
- Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations
- Prepare technical submissions and methodology statements as part of tender returns
- Attend pre-tender meetings, site visits and client interviews across the UK
- Support post-tender negotiations and handover to delivery teams
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Minimum 2 years' experience within ground investigation, ground engineering or a geotechnical contracting environment
- Exposure to retaining structures, piling, or slope stabilisation techniques
- Commercial awareness and understanding of construction cost drivers
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work to tight deadlines and manage multiple tenders simultaneously
- Strong communication skills, both technical and commercial
- Competent user of Microsoft Office (Excel essential)
- Previous pricing and/or design experience is advantageous but not essential
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology or related discipline preferred
- Full, clean UK driving licence (essential)
