Full Time Position – Department of Public Works GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Under general supervision one or more types of heavy automotive equipment operates and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operations; does related work as required. Performs all emergency work for the City which includes digging for the Departments of Water and Public Works.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASSUnder general supervision, employees in this class perform recurring manual duties in connection with the operation of complex heavy motor equipment. They receive general directions from a supervisor but are responsible for the safe and economic operation and care of their equipment on assigned tasks. Incumbents in this class perform manual tasks in connection with assignments. Supervision may be exercised by subordinate employees.
This class differs from Motor Equipment Operator in that the primary function of this job is the operation of equipment requiring a Commercial Driver’s License, Class
B.
- Repairs all broken water and sewer lines, backfills holes and blacktops same.
- Performs digs for all cave-ins, catch basins and manholes.
- Regularly drives and/or operates complex automotive equipment which requires CDLB.
- Operates heavy duty trucks, or other equipment in connection with transportation or collections of large quantities of materials or heavy‑duty supplies.
- Operates heavy duty power shovel, front end loader, bulldozer, sweeper, road grader, vacall and other types of heavy equipment.
- Occasionally performs minor repairs on heavy‑equipment so that equipment will operate efficiently.
- Operates all types of automotive equipment as necessary.
Thorough knowledge of the operation of heavy‑duty automotive equipment; thorough knowledge of safety precautions of the trade; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; dependability; physical condition commensurate with duties of the position.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCETwo years’ experience in the operation of all types of heavy equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT AT TIME OF APPOINTMENTPossession of a valid New York State Commercial Driver's License, Class B at time of appointment and throughout tenure. Depending on equipment to be operated, appropriate endorsements (i.e. airbrakes, hazardous materials, passenger endorsements) may be required. Under New York State law applicants for the CDL must be 21 years old.
