Overview
Construction Equipment Operator, Grounds – University at Buffalo
The University at Buffalo is seeking Construction Equipment Operators within Campus Operations. In this role, you will operate and perform routine servicing on large motor vehicles, participate in loading/unloading, and remove snow and ice during the snow season.
Responsibilities- Operate large grounds maintenance equipment (garbage packers, backhoes, dump trucks, loaders, tractors, snow and ice removal equipment, and others) for at least one third of the work time.
- Assist with spraying, turf repair, fertilizing, grass cutting, pruning, and planting projects.
- Drive large delivery vehicles, load/unload, and transport freight.
- Perform routine service on motorized and non-motorized vehicles and equipment, including changing tires, lubrication, fluid checks/additions, installing/removing snow plows, and minor repairs.
- Move cargo on and off vehicles.
- Remove snow and ice from paved surfaces.
- Perform manual labor related to maintaining campus grounds.
This position is safety-sensitive and requires pre-employment and random alcohol and drug testing under the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.

Requirements- Maintain a valid NYS CDL B driver license with tanker/airbrake endorsement.
- Ability to operate a forklift, front loader, and vehicles with a GVWR of 26,000 pounds; including moving loads or equipment, traveling and maneuvering of vehicles, and safety pre-operation inspections.
- Experience operating riding lawn mower equipment, front loaders, dump trucks, and tractors in a safe and efficient manner.
- Seasonal changes in duties may shift schedules based on seniority; second shift (3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.) and/or third shift (11:30 p.m. – 8:00 a.m.) are possible.
- Willingness to work overtime for snow removal and other seasonal requirements.
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License without an air brake restriction.
- Tanker endorsement by the time of employment.
- One year of full-time experience operating equipment in grounds, highway, parks maintenance, or similar operations.
Physical Demands
- Will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. Frequently transports boxes, materials, and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds across campus.
- Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical tasks in various weather conditions.
