DutiesIndividuals selected must be able to respond to emergency callout within 1 hour during inclement weather, including all snow and ice conditions, to be considered for this position.
- Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort involving exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.
- Will be expected to operate plows during winter operations and obtain the equipment certifications listed above.
- May serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
- Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1: Must be 18 years old, pass physical/medical examination and drug test*, and possess a Class D Driver License.
- Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2: Must be 18 years old, pass physical/medical examination
* and drug test; possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction. Candidates must operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment or may be terminated. - Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Must have satisfactory completion of the Highway Maintenance Worker Traineeship 2 or one year of experience operating highway construction/maintenance equipment or other vehicles over 26,000 GVR with air brakes and possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with DOT-specified endorsements, plus two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications. Must also hold heavy dump truck, one person plowing with single or double wing, and front-end loader certifications.
Must complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification within the first two weeks of employment or may be terminated.
NOTE:
All candidates must pass a pre-employment physical/medical examination
* and drug test prior to beginning employment. Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment. Cannabis use will be tested for during the pre-employment screening process and may be the basis for disqualification for employment or removal from employment.
* Candidates who meet both of the following MAY be eligible to bypass the pre-employment physical: a valid CDL A or B and a current (less than 2 years old) CDL Medical Certificate (form MCSA 5876) that meets specific criteria, discussed at interview.

The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1 (SG
6) is $51,336.00, comprising a base salary of $42,336.00 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000.00.
The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 (SG
7) is $53,475.00, comprising a base salary of $44,475.00 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000.00.
The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (SG
8) is $55,780.00, comprising a base salary of $46,780.00 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000.00.
